प्रत्येक देश क्या, प्रत्येक प्रान्त में भी, सैकड़ों महाकवि और कविरत्न निकल आयेंगे।
लखनऊ-निवासी पण्डित ब्रजनारायण चकबस्त उर्दू के अच्छे कवि हैं। कुछ समय हुआ, उन्होंने "हिन्दुस्तान-रिव्यू" के दो अङ्को में उर्दू-कवियों पर एक निबन्ध लिख कर प्रकाशित किया था। उसमें उन्होंने कुछ कवियों की अत्यधिक प्रशंसा की थी। एच० एल० सी० नामक एक महाशय ने उन कवियों को उस प्रशंसा का पात्र नहीं समझा। अतएव उन्होंने चकबस्त जी के लेख पर एक आक्षेप-पूर्ण छोटा सा लेख, "हिन्दुस्तान-रिव्यू" की आक्टोबर-नवम्बर १९११ की सम्मिलित संख्या में, प्रकाशित किया है। एच० एल० सी० जी के लेख का कुछ अंश हम नीचे उद्धृत करते हैं। चकबस्त जी के प्रशंसित कवियों के विषय में वे लिखते हैं--
"Do they grapple with any of the problems of life, for the solution of which every individual hungers as soon as the dream and romance of youth are shattered by the cruel realities of the world? Do they deal with the abiding questions, the answer to which is strenuously sought by every thinking being when the remorseless tide of actual facts sweeps away the hallowed citadel of every hope and illusion ? * * * * The far-fetched ideas of union with the divine through constant doing on the lady's pencilled eye-lids, or on the quaint rimple in the cheek, or on the recalcitrant curl about the brow rather induce the visible tendency than awaken
