हिंदुस्तानी का आग्रह क्यों ६५ "The tongue of Moslems in India was wont largely to be Persian, but since the middle of the century ( 19th ) it has become Hindoo- stanee, formerly called urdu, which is still the official language of the courts in the districts round Lahore, Delhi, Agra, Lucknow. Else- where the official language of the courts is the language of the region, that is to say, Bengali for Bengal, Oriya for Orissa. Hindi for Behar and Benares, Mahratti for Nagpore and the Central Deccan to Bombay, Gujerathi for the Western Coast, Telegu for the Southern Deccan and the Eastern Coast, Kaparese for the South, Western Coast, and Tamil for the Southern peninsula. P. 181.) भाषा-शास्त्र की दृष्टि से सर रिचर्ड पुल का यह कथन कि हिंदुस्तानी संस्कृत से नहीं निकलती है, खटक सकता है पर सोचिए तो सही उर्दू का संस्कृत से सूल वा प्रकृति के अतिरिक्त कोई और भी संबंध है ? स्मरण रहे, सर रिचर्ड टेंपुल कोई साधारण जीव न थे। वे ईस्ट इंडिया कंपनी के एक सामान्य कर्मचारी से बढ़कर बंबई प्रांत के गवर्नर (१८७७-८०)
