area and its compeers may or may not be regard- ed as Rasas in their own right. The new nine-fold scheme of s according to us, therefore, would be as follows: (1) jt, (2) हास्य, ( 3 ) करुण, (4) वीर, (5) रौद्र-भयानक, (6) बीभत्स, ( 7 ) अद्भुत, (8) शांत, (9) भक्ति. So, the dictum नवरसरुचिरा fa: remains.. Vi विभावs, चरभावs, and अनुभावs. - The भावs are स्थायिभावs. They correspond psychologically to what. Aristotle calls character. Ethos is ethos. We might note two interpretations of the सूत्र विभावानुभावव्यभिचारिसंयोगाद्रसनिष्पत्तिः ( i ) fa is the basis on which these three play and produce Rasa; or (ii) their combination alonė pro- duces Rasa. In the first case, Bhava is the basis of Rasa; in the second case, it is identical with Rasa. In the three-fold scheme of विभावs, चरभावs and as the first two are not so important, while the third is of great moment. The theory of famas . and their specifications into आलम्बन and उद्दीपन does not contain any great discovery. There must be an आलम्बन to produce an emotion, and there must be . an उद्दीपन to fan it. 4- We have preferred the word to the word व्यभिचारिभाव.
