30 PAUMACARIU poetry, mentions' him besides Caturmukha, Harșa and Bāna and speaks reverently of him as a great Acārya surrounded by thou- sands of friends and relatives' Harişena in his Dhammaparikkhā” (A.D 987) raises Svayambhū to the pedestal of a god and praises his knowledge of mundane and supramundane narratives. Kanakamara, the author of Karakanducariu (11th century) remembers him as one possessing a comprehensive mind (visāla- cittu). Hemacandra (1089-1172) considers him as an important metrical authority like Bharata, Kāśyapa, Pingala, Saitava, and Jaya- deva and borrows several passages verbatim from the Svayambhū- cchandas. Several other poets and writers who refer to Svayambhū as a great poet and an authority are mentioned below: Author Work Date Nayanandi Sayalavihivihāņa (in Ap.) 11th Cent. Vira' Jambūsāmicariu 1020 A.D. Sricandra Rayaņakarandu ( 1064 A.D. Kavidarpaņachandovſtti" 13th Cent. Dhanapāla" Bahubalicariu (in Ap.) 1398 A.D. Simhasena alias Raidhu" Mehesaracariu ( 15th Cent. Rāghavabhatta Com. on Sakuntala Gangadāsakavi Chandomañjari" Among the later writers, Rājasekhara Kavi appears to be the most indebted to Svayambhū. For, as pointed out earlier (pp. 46- 47) the Ap. section of his Chandaśśekhara is but a Sanskrit recast 91 (1) Caumuhu Sayambhu Siri-Harisu Donu. n'aloiu kai Isānu Vānu/ Mahapurana 1 1 5.
