आत्मा दे डालेंगे हम अपने आत्म-प्रतिबिम्ब से हाथ धो बैठेंगे- पर जब तक शरीर में प्राण हैं, शरणागत को दूर नहीं करेंगे। विद्रोह शान्त होने पर,३ नवम्बर १८५९ को लार्ड केनिंग ने कानपुर में दरबार किया। प्रधान सेनापति लार्ड क्लाइड भी दरबार में पधारे । ग्रदर के समय जिन लोगों ने अँगरेज़-राज की मदद की थी वे सब सादर बुलाये गये। दरबार में लार्ड केनिंग ने प्रधान सेनापति से राजा रत्नसिंह का परिचय कराते हुए जो वचन कहे वे चरखारी की कोठी के सामने सोने के अक्षरों में लिख रखने लायक हैं। उन्हें हम ज्यों का त्यों नीचे पादटीका * में उद्भत करते हैं। अन्त में आपने कहा-
His Execllency enjoined ali British office- rs who might hereafter enter the territory of the Maharaja to remember these services and to render to his Highness the respect ard condsideration which he so eminently deserves.
- "My lord Clyde,-Allow me to introduce to you a staunch and loyal ally of ours;who when the rebels that beleagured his fort demanded from him the British officer whom he had protected,returned for answer that he would deliver up his own son, but with his life defend his British guest" :-
