The jungle round the Stupa has been cleared and the grounds levelled and unsightly dit- ches filled up. An estimate for repairing the stone portion of the Stupa is under preparation.
A new stone-shed called the "Museum" was also constructed on a design furnished by Mr. F. O. Oertel, Executive Engineer in purely Hindu style. The construction of the shed was commenced in the previous year and was completed during the year under review. The old Buddhist sculptures are now kept in this Museum.
Excavations of the ancient ruins at Sarnath were carried out under the instructions of Mr. Oertel. A number of Budhist stupas, a large Vihara, and traces of many Budhist shrines, were uncovered, together with a large unmber of sculptures of stone, terra- cotta, and plaster of great archaeological interest. The most interesting of these lat -ter are (1) a magnificently well finished column;with an inscription which fixes it to the period of Asoka ;
